The crates are made of wood. Therefore, the hatchet would be used to open them :headbang:

:popcorn: Wow! Everybody's guesses are so good. I too have been trying to zooooom in on what the boy is holding. To me it looks like a figure or a doll of a farmer or a lumberjack. I can definitely see a "face" there!

Well, well it looks like he's holding an old box of Quaker Oats with a label showing a farmer holding a shaft of quality oats grown in ND. Perhaps the suggestions is oats produced in ND and popcorn grown in IA make a great team in their finished products. Not sure I dare sign my name on those thoughts.
