Anyone know anything about "rocker" figures?

Hello all,

I'm a 69 year old kid and a "newby" to this site. Needless to say, I'm a CJ enthusiast the same as you. Can anyone provide information about these "rocker" figures, such as when they were issued or how many different shapes and colors were made? BTW, my favorites are the stand-up mottled plastic figures from the early fifties.

Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, --spudgy

Hello Spudgy,

Geeze, have you opened up a can of worms! Not really, but there are a lot of variations to your rockers. They were released in the 1950s and were the creation of C. Carey Cloud. A grandson, Luke Spence is the administrator of this board and may be able to shed more light on the subject. As a collector, I noticed the variations: there were rockers with no "cylinders" on the rocker, rockers with two cylinders, rockers with 3 cylinders, some series marked "C.J.CO." some unmarked. Most of the colors are pastel: light pink, light blue, light yellow, ivory, but then also in translucent colors. Figures include: rabbit, monkey, clown, dog, donkey, eagle and pig. Once you take into account the variations of rocker & cylinder, color, figure, you can easily come up with hundreds of variations.

:D Congratulations on your fun rocker prizes! :D

A full set of rockers would include these in addition to the ones you have pictured:
Ball Player (Baseball Pitcher)
Clown
Parrot on Perch
Pig wearing pants
Rabbit

Happy Hunting and Enjoy!

Hello Spudgy, and welcome to the CJCA forums. There are 10 different Rockers, which can be seen here -> C. Carey Cloud Cracker Jack Plastic Rockers.

As Larry mentioned, there is wide variety of color, as well as variety in the base of the rockers. (Some have cylinders and others are lacking.)

The mottled colored rockers were the result of combining the left over bits of plastic. A great way to save money during production, and it gives us very interesting pieces to enjoy.

Wow! Thanks a bunch! I didn't know any of that and I certainly didn't know I'd be talking to Mr. Cloud's Grandson. How great is that? Well, I guess this shows how much there is to learn about Cracker Jack prizes. Interestingly, after you told me about the barrels, I went back to look and saw that four of my eight rockers have two barrels and four don't. Also, three have C.J. CO. on the back and the rest have nothing on back.

Again, thanks for your help and I hope to post a couple more questions about some of my other pieces, soon.

Have a Cracker Jack day!

Are the other rockers listed in the CJ book not CCC pieces then? Only the 10 listed are CCC pieces?

Those 10 do have a similar design "look" to them that the others don't have.

There are a few rockers that were not designed by CCC, at least I don't believe they were. A Rocking Horse, Monkey, and Bear. These rockers have the same image on both sides, whereas the CCC rockers are only one sided. I'll scan a picture of the non-CCC rockers and post them later.

Non CCC-Rockers
I wonder what the number "1889 42" on the thigh of the bear means.

The bear belongs to a more recent 1970's Series #1389. There are 48 in the set; #42 indicates the prize number. These were reproduced by Cracker Jack in 1993, same Series number, but only 24 of them. Each prize kept its original number. Original colors were dark green, true green, dark blue, pink, yellow, orange and red. The repros were done in in smurf blue, pink, red, and yield sign yellow. I can't tell for sure which set your bear goes to.
