jdnola wrote:Your rabbit from the Plastic Molded Products Co. apparently is from 1949. Though records don't specifically indicate the year of distribution, prizes from just before and just after the rabbits are from 1949, so this is probably the right date. Nice one you have there, beautifully marbled, which seems to be a genetic trait for this particular "Greek" rabbit. The details that good scans reveal never cease to amaze me; the artists really didn't have to go to so much trouble, but did anyway. I like to think they were really enjoying exploring the possibilities of the relatviely new injection molding procress. I forgot that most of these are marked.

I picked up several of these rabbits in lots of plastic prizes.

I'm curious about the statement above regarding the distribution records of specific prizes. Where could these records be viewed at? Does anyone have a list of prize distribution for the late 40's, early 50's?

I'm not sure what records JD is talking about, but I do have a bunny with a spike in it's head.
(Actually, I have seen some records from the Cracker Jack vault that list prizes, but I don't know how complete it is)

Here are the "bunnies" that I've accumulated. I noticed that there are two distinct castings. You'll notice that one has a much thicker base. These two are facing right. The four thin base are facing left. They seem to be the same overall height however.

Other differences are:

Thick base: CJCO on right side
Thin base: CJCO on left side

Thick base: Thicker vertical lines on base.
Thin base: Thinner vertical lines on base

Thick base: short ears
Thin base: long ears

Thick base: large tail
Thin base: small tail

Thick base: large eye with long line
Thin base: small eye with short line

The overall body shape and front paw shape is slightly different also. I put the castings back-to-back to better show the differences.

I wonder if records show different companies making these, or if there were two distinct periods of issue.

Donovan,

Now THAT is the sort of information I love to learn. That is the sort of thing I used to do with alphabet prizes. I have never noticed these differences before. Now I have to go look at mine and see what variations I have.

Luke,

Your "unicorn" bunny is interesting. The spike is part of the plastic "tree" from which the part was molded in the injection molding process. It is not unusual to find toys with extra plastic on them, but it is unusual to find a Cracker Jack prize to have this much extra. It would be awesome to learn the provenance of this item.

Best Regards,
Jeffrey

Jeffrey,

Alex has a bunny identical to mine, except for the coloring. We have a thread called Cracker Jack prize with a little something extra where we posted plastic pieces with extra bits hanging off of them.

Here's another good pic of the difference from an ebay auction.
