How to get my collection appraised?

Post by epankow »

My fiance' and I had inherited her grandfathers collection of crackerjack toys, memorabilia, tins, vending machines, etc. The collection seriously will fill a one story house with ease to give a rough example of how huge this collection is. We have looked at some stuff we have to give us a rough estimate on how much certain things cost like the vending machines, steel toys, old pins from the 1910's-1920's, riddles, tins from the 1920's(I believe), mini baseball bat, old steel whistles, and a few other things I'm not remembering at this time. There are some older things we have that we haven't been able to find either in books or being currently sold online, so we have no idea what they may be worth. Which is why I decided to make this thread seeing as most people on here I believe to be die hard cracker jack enthusiast's. I can't take EVERYTHING to a trade show(which someone told me to do in the past), since like I said the collection in our opinion is probably the world's largest collection(My fiance's dad has contacted guiness about the size for recognition). If anyone knows where I could get someone to possibly appraise the collection or if someone on here may be interested in buying some of what we have please send me a message or just reply to the thread I would greatly appreciate it. In my personal opinion without getting it appraised, based off of how huge the collection is I think it's worth anywhere from 50-100k dollars in total. I may be wrong, but If anyone seen the abundance of toys and everything else I think they'd say the same thing.

Hi, and welcome to the forums. Last July there was an a big auction of the Dreier collection. I think it was estimated to be worth $40-60k. I don't know what it sold for, but the person that bought it resold it on eBay. They made hundreds of postings a day and it went on for months before it was all sold. If I can remember the eBay user name I'll pass it along to you. They may have some helpful insights and tips.

I wouldn't be able to help appraise your collection, as I'm an amateur at best. Especially when compared many of the other collectors in the organization. However, I would still love to see the collection. Any chance you could post some photos? Perhaps someone could give an vague appraisal from that. However, I think someone would need to be there to look closely at everything to give you a decent appraisal. I'm guessing that you're in northern Ohio, is that correct?

I just found one of the threads about the Dreier collection. The links are no longer valid, but at the bottom of the page is an email address of the person from the auction house. Perhaps they might be able to help you directly, or know someone who can. CRACKER JACK COLLECTION 1800'S - 1990'S --Auction 7/28 in LA

Thanks for the replies I do appreciate it. I will take as many pictures as I can since I literally have stuff stacked to the ceiling. We also don't even have everything yet(which is the sad part), and the reason why is that I'm running out of room in my house. I have two rooms dedicated to crackerjack right now lol. I'll start taking some pictures tonight and post some up, and throughout the week I'll try to update with more photo's.

Yes we are in northern ohio(Sandusky to be exact) at this time, and will probably reside here for at least 5 or so more years.

These are just pics of not even a quarter of the collection, many more pics to follow later today. I would appreciate any input on this collection in regards to what the possible worth of things may be. I am unfamiliar with cracker jack prizes and their worth, but my grandfather lived for cracker jack, started collecting as a young boy, and remained an advent collector throughout his adulthood. Thanks for any advice you can give!
