lenticular - The trade term for a tilt card,
which has more than one picture printed in parallel lines on the same plane,
and a plastic lense is used to filter the image so that only one view can
be seen at a time. The lenticular lense, which is applied to the printed
card in the manufacturing process, enables the viewer to see only the image
determined by the angle at which the image is viewed, thus the item can be
turned (tilted "to and fro" as the backs one set of Cracker Jack lenticulars
instruct), or the viewing angle changed, and different images will be seen.
Three effects or a combination of any of them have been used in Cracker Jack
lenticular prizes: (a) animation, where the image appears to have movement
or action; (b) change, where the image appears to change, or morph, into
another image; (c) three-dimension (3-D) effect, where the background appears
to have depth. The same or similar lenticular photographic processes are
used in all of these effects. The most popular lenticular prizes are the
ones which combine two or three effects, as in the Mark McGuire tilt cards
available in the summer and fall of 1999. The major manufacturers of lenticular
prizes in the past have included Vari-Vue, Inc. (1950s to '70s), Toppan Printing,
Ltd. (1980s), and Optigraphics Corporation (1980s
to '90s). Some uses of lenticular technology in Cracker Jack prizes have
included Alphabet Magic Motion Fun Cards, BELT
KLIPS, Canadian 3-D Animals cards, DINO-MARKS Bookmarks/Clips, Kaleidoscope
Action Card/Sticker, KALEIDO-KLIPS Button Clip-ons, 1984 Olympic Tilt Cards,
ROBOTRONS Cards, SPACE MAGIC Cards, TAG ALONGS shoe lace decorations, Wishbone
dog tags. Related prizes with cruder technology but using similar principles
include Cagey Animals (where one animal changes to another when moved behind
the "cage"), and Op Tricks (where a thin plastic film is moved in front of
a monochromatic lined image to show motion). LINK TO SEE:
